EFC churches are committed to cooperation with one another in ministry and fellowship in Canada and around the world. There are more than 1400 Evangelical Free Churches in the US and there are 30 members of the International Federation of Free Evangelical Churches worldwide.

Why ‘Evangelical Free’?

Evangelical refers to the EFC commitment to the proclamation of the Gospel and to the authority of Scripture as being inerrant in the original writings and the only safe and sufficient guide to faith and practice.

Free is a term that historically designated a church as being independent of state control. In the North American context, unencumbered by state religious sanctions, the term conveys a commitment to congregational church government and to local church autonomy with regard to the purchase of property, calling of pastors, setting budgets and determining ministries. Evangelical Free Churches depend on the active participation of lay people for decisions and direction, as they voluntarily band together to promote missions, church planting and other aspects of church ministry.
